Tree Removal Cost: Sacramento County, CA
Sacramento calls itself a city of trees, and most of the work here is big street-side and backyard shade trees on flat valley lots, not forest. Valley oaks, elms, sycamores and London planes planted generations ago now hang over roofs from Carmichael to Elk Grove. HomeGuide's 2026 national survey sets the usual single-tree job between $400 and $1,200.
Wild forest is scarce: the Forest Service's FIA estimates for the California 2024 evaluation show only about 13,800 acres of forest land countywide, all of it western oak woodland, and with just 3 plots the estimate carries a wide margin.
Building is steady: the Census Bureau's county permit tallies show 4,629 one-family houses approved in Sacramento County in 2025, up from 4,047 in 2023, with new subdivisions in Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova and Natomas working around heritage oaks.
Permits
Native oaks need a permit. In unincorporated Sacramento County, Chapter 19.12 (Tree Preservation and Protection) requires a tree permit to remove a protected tree or to trench, grade or fill inside its dripline, and the county says native oaks generally need one regardless of property type. The county's tree permit fee is $31.95, collected when the approved permit is released.
Cities write their own rules. The City of Sacramento, Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Folsom and Rancho Cordova each regulate protected or heritage trees separately, and street trees in the city belong to the city's urban forestry staff.
HomeGuide's $400-$1,200 range doesn't include the permit, an arborist report or replacement trees.
Step 1: confirm city or unincorporated county. Step 2: identify the tree; native oaks and trees on public frontage are the usual triggers. Step 3: file the county permit and wait for release before cutting. Step 4: compare itemized bids. Step 5: request an 811 locate ahead of any stump work.
Local conditions
Wet valley soils: NRCS soil survey data for Sacramento County (CA067) rate 28.1% of mapped acres as hydric and 20.5% with a water table within about 30 cm at some point in the year, mostly in the Delta lowlands in the south and along the American River and Sacramento River. Saturated clay lets big trees uproot in winter wind.
Mostly flat: only 10.4% of the county's mapped acres sit at 15% slope or more per the NRCS survey, nearly all toward the Sierra foothills in the east near Folsom, so bucket trucks reach most backyard trees.
Storm record: FEMA's declarations data list 15 federal major disaster declarations from storms and floods in Sacramento County, 7 severe storms and 7 floods among them, most recently the January and April 2023 winter storms that dropped oaks and elms across the region.
Summer limb drop is a known oak behavior on hot, still afternoons, and old valley oaks along the river parkway shed heavy limbs without warning.
What drives local prices
- Big shade trees: per HomeGuide, a tree 30 to 60 feet tall usually costs $500 to $1,500 to take down and one of 60 to 80 feet $850 to $2,000, the range most mature valley oaks and elms land in.
- By species, HomeGuide's guide shows oaks from $300 to $2,500 and maples from $600 to $1,200.
- Paperwork: Sacramento County's $31.95 permit fee is minor; an arborist report, if the county asks for one, is billed separately.
- Roots and stumps: HomeGuide lists stump removal at $100 to $500 and up, before any driveway or sidewalk repair.
- Basis: dollar ranges are quoted from HomeGuide's published national guide (Feb 4, 2026) and the county's fee page; checked October 20, 2026.
