Tree Removal Cost: Sarasota County, FL
A pine, the most common forest tree in Sarasota County, costs $250 to $1,600 to remove on HomeGuide's February 2026 national figures, and an oak $300 to $2,500; HomeGuide's guide puts a typical single tree at $400 to $1,200. Slash pines in Venice and North Port yards usually come down in a few sections, while a spreading live oak over a Siesta Key roof needs ropes, a bucket truck or a crane.
Who you ask for permission depends on the address. Sarasota County regulates trees in the unincorporated county under its Trees Code, the City of Sarasota runs its own tree protection rules with fees per tree, and North Port and Longboat Key have their own codes too. Check that first, because the rules differ a lot across a few miles of US 41.
The Forest Service's 2025 FIA forest inventory puts forest land in the county at about 90,900 acres, with longleaf/slash pine at 39.6%, tropical hardwoods at 24.2% and oak/hickory at 24.1%. Flat, waterlogged sand and a long list of hurricanes, from Charley in 2004 to Helene and Milton in 2024, do the rest.

Permits
Unincorporated county: the Trees Code is Chapter 54, Article XVIII of the county code, and county environmental staff say tree permits are issued only when one of the conditions listed in Section 54-586(2) is met. The county asks you to contact it before removing a native tree with a trunk over 4 inches or a palm with more than 8 feet of clear trunk. It also protects about 24 miles of designated canopy roads, where even pruning in the right-of-way needs a permit.
Replacement trees required by the county must be at least 8 feet tall with a 2-inch trunk diameter, and under Section 54-590(f) one that dies within seven years has to be replaced. No county permit is needed to trim trees on private property.
City of Sarasota: a permit is required to remove any tree over 4.5 inches in diameter at breast height and most palms, including dead or prohibited species, which carry no fee. Every tree on the application must be tied with orange ribbon within 24 hours of applying; skip that and the city charges a $100 re-inspection fee. Grand trees, which the city defines as live or sand live oaks of 24 inches or more and slash or longleaf pines or red cedars of 20 inches or more, get the closest review. Mangroves need a Florida DEP permit first.
Florida Statutes s. 163.045 applies in every jurisdiction here: an ISA certified arborist's written finding that a residential tree is an unacceptable risk means no permit, fee or replanting can be required.
Step 1: confirm whether the county, the City of Sarasota, North Port or Longboat Key has jurisdiction. Step 2: measure the trunk and note any grand tree, palm or mangrove. Step 3: file the permit, or get an arborist's s. 163.045 letter for a hazardous tree. Step 4: compare itemized bids for removal, grinding, haul-off and any replacement tree. Step 5: call 811 before grinding or replanting.
Local conditions
Waterlogged sand: NRCS soil survey data rate 92.7% of mapped acres in Sarasota County as poorly or very poorly drained, with the water table within 30 cm on 42.8% and 36.4% hydric, from the Myakka River flatwoods in the east to the low ground along the coast. Roots stay shallow, so big pines and oaks uproot rather than snap.
Almost no relief: the same NRCS survey puts just 0.2% of mapped acres at 8% slope or more, so access problems here are soft ground and tight canal and island lots near the Gulf, not hills.
Hurricanes: FEMA's declarations data list 28 weather- or fire-related major disasters that included Sarasota County from 1968 through 2024, 13 of them hurricanes and 18 declared since 2000, including Irma (2017), Ian (2022) and Helene and Milton (2024).
Salt and sea breeze on Siesta Key, Casey Key and Manasota Key stress oaks and palms along the coast, and tall palms on the keys take the strongest Gulf gusts in a storm.
What drives local prices
- Species: HomeGuide's national figures list pine at $250-$1,600, oak at $300-$2,500 and palm at $200-$1,200 per tree.
- Height: per HomeGuide, under 30 ft runs $200-$500 and over 80 ft $1,200-$2,500+.
- City paperwork: in the City of Sarasota a missed ribbon means a $100 re-inspection fee; dead and prohibited trees still need a permit but carry no fee.
- Island and canal access: narrow lots on the keys may need a crane; we add an est. 20% to 40% for that.
- Cleanup: HomeGuide puts stump removal at $100-$500+ and chipping at $50-$100.
- Method: per-tree, height and cleanup ranges are HomeGuide's published national figures (Feb 4, 2026); permit rules and the re-inspection fee come from the county and City of Sarasota pages; lines marked est. are our estimate, not Sarasota bids. Figures checked October 16, 2026.

Manatee County borders Sarasota on the north; its page covers the county's back-yard exemption and street-tree rules.

When something can’t wait
After a hurricane, treat every downed line as live and call FPL or 911. A tree that threatens your house can be removed under an arborist's s. 163.045 risk letter; HomeGuide says same-day removals run 2 to 3 times normal rates, so secure the site and photograph it first.
Questions about Sarasota County
How much does tree removal cost in Sarasota County?
Most single trees run $400 to $1,200 on HomeGuide's 2026 national data; pines $250 to $1,600 and oaks $300 to $2,500. Island access, crane work and permits push some jobs higher.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in unincorporated Sarasota County?
Often. The county issues permits only for the conditions in Section 54-586(2) and asks owners to call before removing native trees over 4 inches or palms with over 8 feet of clear trunk.
What are the rules inside the City of Sarasota?
Any tree over 4.5 inches in diameter needs a permit, even a dead one, and each tree must be marked with orange ribbon within 24 hours of applying or the city charges a $100 re-inspection fee.
Do I need a permit just to trim?
No. Both the county and the City of Sarasota say routine trimming on private property needs no permit, though mangroves need a state permit and canopy-road trees in the right-of-way need a county one.
Will FPL remove storm debris?
No. FPL's FAQ says it leaves debris where it fell after named storms; the owner or local government removes it.
