Maryland Tree Removal Cost and Rules

Maryland regulates the person doing the work more than most states do. Anyone paid to treat, prune or remove trees needs a Licensed Tree Expert license from the DNR Forest Service, and work near tidal water or along public roads has its own rules. HomeGuide's February 2026 national survey sets the baseline: $400 to $1,200 for a typical tree.

Hardwoods cover most of the state. The Forest Service's 2025 FIA evaluation for Maryland estimates about 2.39 million acres of forest land, 61.4% of it oak/hickory, 15.8% loblolly/shortleaf pine (mostly on the Eastern Shore) and 5.8% each oak/gum/cypress and oak/pine.

Storms are frequent: FEMA's declarations data list 30 weather-related major disasters for Maryland, including 10 floods, 7 severe storms, 6 hurricanes and 6 snowstorms. This hub covers the statewide rules and links the Howard County and Kent County pages.

Permits

Licensing: Maryland DNR says a person may not engage in the work or business of a tree expert without a license, though employees can work under a licensed expert's supervision. Licensed experts must carry liability and property damage insurance and must give clients a written contract listing their license number, the scope of work, the dates and the price. DNR keeps a public search to check a license.

Roadside trees: the DNR Forest Service says anyone, homeowner or company, who plans to plant, prune or remove a tree in a public road right-of-way must first get a Roadside Tree Permit, and the permit may require replanting.

Near the water: the Critical Area Commission says the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area covers all land within 1,000 feet of tidal waters and tidal wetlands, with a Buffer at least 100 feet wide where any cutting needs a Buffer Management Plan from the county. Outside the Buffer, homeowners can usually remove trees with local approval if they replant.

Disposal rules are county by county; Howard County's fee schedule, for one, lists yard trim free up to 2 tons a year for residents and $40 per ton after. Step 1: check whether the tree is in a road right-of-way or the Critical Area. Step 2: look up the company's Licensed Tree Expert number. Step 3: get a written contract. Step 4: call Miss Utility 811 before stump grinding.

Local conditions

Piedmont and coastal plain: NRCS soil survey data put 11.4% of Howard County (MD027) at 15% slope or more but only 2.3% of Kent County (MD029), so central Maryland jobs often need rigging on slopes while Eastern Shore jobs deal with soft, wet ground near the tidal creeks.

Oak forests: the FIA estimates put oak/hickory at 52.6% of Kent County's forest land on the Eastern Shore, and statewide oak is the most common group, which is why big oaks dominate removal work.

Hurricanes and snow: per FEMA, Howard County has 14 weather-related major disaster declarations and Kent County 13, from the Ellicott City floods along the Patapsco to hurricanes on the Chester River shore.

Summer derechos and ice storms add to the storm work from Western Maryland to the Bay.

What drives local prices

  • Species: HomeGuide's species chart lists oak at $300-$2,500, ash at $650-$2,000 and pine at $250-$1,600.
  • Height: tulip poplars often pass 80 ft, a size HomeGuide puts at $1,200-$2,500 and up.
  • Paperwork: a Roadside Tree Permit or Buffer Management Plan, per Maryland DNR and the Critical Area Commission, can add replanting to the job.
  • Disposal: Howard County residents drop off up to 2 tons of yard trim a year free at Alpha Ridge, per the County fee schedule, then pay $40 per ton.
  • Stump: HomeGuide's survey says stump removal runs $100-$500+.
  • Method: species, height and stump figures are HomeGuide's February 4, 2026 nationwide ranges, not Maryland bids; licensing and roadside rules from Maryland DNR; Critical Area rules from the Critical Area Commission. Checked October 19, 2026.

Service area

County pages on the site: Howard (Columbia, Ellicott City, Elkridge, Clarksville) and Kent (Chestertown, Rock Hall, Galena, Betterton). The two don't border each other; Howard sits between Baltimore and Washington, and Kent is on the upper Eastern Shore.

If your county isn't listed, ask county Planning about the Critical Area and forest conservation easements, and the DNR Forest Service about roadside trees.

For a Maryland price, send the species, height and what's under the tree through the free form below; replies go out by email.

When something can’t wait

BGE, Delmarva Power, Pepco and Potomac Edison crews handle lines in their areas; call the utility or 911 if a tree hits wires. HomeGuide says emergency crews often charge 2 to 3 times standard rates, and the contractor still needs a Licensed Tree Expert license.

Ask about your clearing project

Tell us the acreage, what is growing on it and what the land is for: pasture, house pad, trails or a view. The form goes to Cornelia Cove LLC, which runs this site, and we reply by email. We use your details only to answer this request, and we pass them to a contractor only if you ask us to.

Bring a range from our estimator to every site visit. A clearing bid should price clearing, stumps, debris disposal and grading separately, and say who handles permits.
