Tree Removal Cost: Howard County, MD

Howard County tree work is mostly big hardwoods on suburban lots: tulip poplars, red and white oaks and red maples over houses in Columbia, Ellicott City and Clarksville, plus dead ash killed by emerald ash borer and storm-split Bradford pears. HomeGuide's nationwide 2026 pricing pegs a typical tree job at $400 to $1,200.

New construction has slowed sharply: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey counts 329 single-family buildings authorized in Howard County in 2025, down from 592 in 2024 and 603 in 2023.

That means most jobs are mature trees on established lots, where disposal, access and storm history drive the price more than clearing.

Permits

We found no county permit for cutting a tree on an ordinary residential lot, but check first whether the tree sits in a forest conservation or landscape easement recorded on your subdivision plan; Howard County Planning and Zoning can tell you. Forest conservation plans mostly apply to development.

Disposal is cheap for residents. Howard County's Alpha Ridge Landfill fee schedule lists clean wood and yard trim, including brush and branches, at no charge for residents up to 2 tons per fiscal year and $40 per ton beyond that. The Wood Waste Area is open to residents Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; plastic bags and tarps go home with you.

Step 1: check your plat for easements. Step 2: plan disposal: Alpha Ridge, curbside yard trim collection or chipping. Step 3: check the fall zone for the house, fences and BGE lines. Step 4: compare itemized written bids that say who hauls the wood. Step 5: call Miss Utility (811) before stump grinding.

Local conditions

Rolling piedmont: NRCS soil survey data for Howard County (MD027) put 37.9% of mapped acres at 8% slope or more and 11.4% at 15% or more, steepest along the Patapsco and Little Patuxent river valleys, where trees on slopes need rigging.

Wet bottoms: the same NRCS survey puts a water table within about a foot (30 cm) on 13.4% of mapped acres, mostly near streams, and finds bedrock within about 39 inches on only 4.3%.

Floods: FEMA's declarations data list 14 weather-related major disasters for Howard County, including 6 floods, 4 snowstorms, 2 hurricanes and 2 severe storms; the 2016 and 2018 severe storm and flooding declarations followed the floods that tore through Ellicott City's Main Street along the Patapsco and its tributaries.

Storms: hurricane remnants, snow and summer thunderstorm gusts break oaks and poplars on saturated soil.

What drives local prices

  • Species: on HomeGuide's species chart, ash runs $650-$2,000, oak $300-$2,500 and maple $600-$1,200.
  • Height: tulip poplars here often clear 80 ft, the top row of HomeGuide's chart at $1,200 to $2,500 and up.
  • Disposal: residents drop off up to 2 tons of yard trim a year free at Alpha Ridge, then pay $40 per ton, which keeps haul-off costs down.
  • Access: fenced back yards and slopes mean rigging; HomeGuide lists hourly rates of $100-$400+.
  • Stump: HomeGuide's survey puts stump removal at $100-$500+.
  • Method: HomeGuide's February 4, 2026 nationwide survey is the source for the species, height, hourly and stump dollars; Alpha Ridge's free 2-ton allowance and $40 rate come from the County's FY27 fee schedule. These are not quotes from local crews. Checked October 19, 2026.

Ask about your clearing project

Tell us the acreage, what is growing on it and what the land is for: pasture, house pad, trails or a view. The form goes to Cornelia Cove LLC, which runs this site, and we reply by email. We use your details only to answer this request, and we pass them to a contractor only if you ask us to.

Bring a range from our estimator to every site visit. A clearing bid should price clearing, stumps, debris disposal and grading separately, and say who handles permits.
