Tree Removal Cost: Ottawa County, MI

Ottawa County tree work splits between the lakeshore and the farm-and-suburb country inland. Near Grand Haven, Holland and Spring Lake, oaks, maples and white pines grow on sand dunes that the state regulates; inland around Hudsonville, Jenison and Allendale, it's maples, ash snags and oaks on flat, wet ground. HomeGuide's 2026 national cost survey says a typical removal costs $400 to $1,200.

Oak leads the woods. The Forest Service's 2025 FIA evaluation for Michigan estimates about 116,200 acres of forest land in the county: oak/hickory 50.7%, elm/ash/cottonwood 23.8% and maple/beech/birch 20.0%.

Homebuilding stays steady: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey counts 868 single-family buildings authorized in Ottawa County in 2025, after 779 in 2024 and 962 in 2023, so lot clearing in growing townships is a regular job alongside mature-tree removal.

Permits

Oak timing matters more than paperwork. The Michigan DNR advises homeowners not to trim or prune oaks from April 15 to July 15, when sap beetles carry oak wilt to fresh wounds; it says red oaks can die within weeks, and that a wounded oak should get tree-wound or latex paint right away. Schedule oak work for winter when you can.

On the dunes, a state permit can apply. Michigan's Part 353 (Sand Dunes Protection and Management) requires a permit from EGLE for projects in a Critical Dune Area that involve vegetation removal, earthmoving or construction. The Ottawa Conservation District can help with the process and charges $250 to complete the Vegetation Assurance form the permit requires. It also notes the state designated roughly 74,000 acres as Critical Dune Areas in 1989.

Away from the dunes, cutting a tree on your own residential lot generally needs no County permit, but city and township rules on street trees and burning vary, so check with yours.

Step 1: confirm whether the lot is in a Critical Dune Area. Step 2: hold oak work until after July 15 unless it's a hazard. Step 3: decide on chipping or haul-off. Step 4: get written, itemized bids. Step 5: call MISS DIG 811 before stump grinding.

Local conditions

Wet ground inland: NRCS soil survey data for Ottawa County (MI139) rate 53.7% of mapped acres poorly or somewhat poorly drained and put a water table within about a foot (30 cm) on 34.6%, mostly on the clay plains near the Grand River and its creeks, so heavy equipment sinks and trees uproot in wet springs.

Sand on the lakeshore: soils along the Lake Michigan coast are dune sand, where pines and oaks root shallowly and the bluff edge limits where a tree can fall.

Storms: FEMA's declarations data list 9 weather-related major disasters for the county, 4 floods, 4 severe storms and a tornado; the latest, declared June 2013, covered flooding along the Grand River.

Lake-effect snow and ice load maples and pines in winter, and summer thunderstorms off the lake snap limbs.

What drives local prices

  • Species: HomeGuide's species table lists oak at $300-$2,500, maple $600-$1,200 and ash $650-$2,000.
  • Dunes: work on a Critical Dune Area lot may add the EGLE permit and the $250 Vegetation Assurance form, per the Ottawa Conservation District.
  • Wet ground: soft clay soils mean mats or hand carrying, which adds crew hours at HomeGuide's $100-$400+ hourly rate.
  • Lot clearing: wooded lots for new homes are bid by the acre, a range HomeGuide puts at $1,200-$8,000.
  • Stump: HomeGuide's survey says stump removal runs $100-$500+.
  • Method: species, hourly, acre and stump figures come from HomeGuide's February 4, 2026 nationwide survey, not West Michigan bids; oak timing from the Michigan DNR; dune rules from the Ottawa Conservation District. Checked October 19, 2026.

When something can’t wait

A tree on a Consumers Energy or BPW line is a utility job; call them or 911 and keep away. HomeGuide says after-hours storm crews often charge 2 to 3 times normal, and an oak damaged in spring should have its wounds painted right away.

Ask about your clearing project

Tell us the acreage, what is growing on it and what the land is for: pasture, house pad, trails or a view. The form goes to Cornelia Cove LLC, which runs this site, and we reply by email. We use your details only to answer this request, and we pass them to a contractor only if you ask us to.

Bring a range from our estimator to every site visit. A clearing bid should price clearing, stumps, debris disposal and grading separately, and say who handles permits.
