Tree Removal Cost: Chester County, PA

Chester County is old oak country: tulip poplars, red and white oaks, beech and dead ash tower over farmhouses and subdivisions from Kennett Square to Phoenixville. HomeGuide's 2026 national survey puts a typical removal at $400 to $1,200, but many trees here are bigger than typical.

Oaks dominate. The Forest Service's 2025 FIA evaluation for Pennsylvania estimates about 86,300 acres of forest land in the county, 79.9% of it oak/hickory and 12.8% elm/ash/cottonwood.

Building stays steady: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey counts 1,082 single-family buildings authorized in 2025, after 1,187 in 2024 and 1,112 in 2023, so lot clearing in growing townships runs alongside removals on older properties.

Permits

Pennsylvania has no statewide permit to cut a tree on your own lot, and Chester County doesn't either; townships and boroughs such as West Chester, Tredyffrin and Easttown may regulate street trees, woodland disturbance during development and outdoor burning, so check yours.

Spotted lanternfly rules apply to whoever moves the wood. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture says businesses that move brush, yard waste, logs or equipment within or out of the quarantine need a spotted lanternfly permit, and Chester County is in it. Ask a contractor whether its crew holds one.

Disposal has a price. The Chester County Solid Waste Authority's 2026 fee schedule lists branches and limbs up to 16 inches in diameter and 8 feet long, plus brush and shrubs, at $55 per ton at Lanchester Landfill, with leaves at $25 per ton from October through January; it charges $120 to clean up loads with trash, stones or dirt and does not accept stumps.

Step 1: check your township's rules. Step 2: for ash, find out whether it's already dead. Step 3: ask the crew about its lanternfly permit and where the wood goes. Step 4: get written bids. Step 5: call PA One Call 811 before stump grinding.

Local conditions

Rolling hills: NRCS soil survey data for Chester County (PA029) put 33.5% of mapped acres at 8% slope or more and 13.8% at 15% or more, steepest along the Brandywine Creek valleys and along the North Valley Hills above the Great Valley, where big oaks on slopes need rigging.

Mostly well drained: only 8.4% of mapped acres have a water table within about a foot, per the same NRCS survey, mostly near the creeks, and bedrock within about 39 inches shows up on 5.9%.

Hurricanes and floods: FEMA's declarations data list 17 weather-related major disasters for the county, including 5 floods, 4 hurricanes, 4 severe storms and 3 snowstorms; the latest, declared September 2021, covered the remnants of Hurricane Ida, which flooded creeks across the county.

Summer thunderstorms and nor'easters bring down tall tulip poplars and oaks on wet ground.

What drives local prices

  • Species: HomeGuide's species table lists oak at $300-$2,500, ash at $650-$2,000 and maple at $600-$1,200.
  • Height: tulip poplars here often top 80 ft, which HomeGuide puts at $1,200-$2,500 and up.
  • Disposal: the Chester County Solid Waste Authority charges $55 per ton for branches and brush, and stumps have to go elsewhere.
  • Lanternfly: crews moving wood need the state permit, per the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, which favors established companies.
  • Stump: HomeGuide says stump removal runs $100-$500+.
  • Method: species, height and stump figures are HomeGuide national ranges (Feb 4, 2026), not Chester County quotes; disposal from the Chester County Solid Waste Authority; quarantine from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Checked October 19, 2026.

Ask about your clearing project

Tell us the acreage, what is growing on it and what the land is for: pasture, house pad, trails or a view. The form goes to Cornelia Cove LLC, which runs this site, and we reply by email. We use your details only to answer this request, and we pass them to a contractor only if you ask us to.

Bring a range from our estimator to every site visit. A clearing bid should price clearing, stumps, debris disposal and grading separately, and say who handles permits.
