Tree Removal Cost in Orange County, FL

An oak, the tree behind most Orange County quotes, runs $300 to $2,500 to remove according to HomeGuide's February 2026 cost guide, and HomeGuide's guide puts an average single tree at $400 to $1,200. Laurel and water oaks spreading over Orlando and Winter Park roofs sit toward the top of that range; a slash pine with a clear drop zone in an Apopka back yard sits near the bottom.

Paperwork is lighter here than in South Florida. Orange County's Zoning Division says a tree removal permit is needed for an occupied single-family or duplex lot only when it is larger than 2 acres, and for any vacant property. Most suburban homeowners in unincorporated Orange County can hire a crew without a county permit, though the cities set their own rules.

The Forest Service's 2025 FIA forest inventory puts forest land in the county at about 182,400 acres: the oak/gum/cypress group covers 31.6%, longleaf/slash pine 25.4% and oak/hickory 21.0%. That mix of swamp hardwoods, pine flatwoods and upland oaks, plus very wet ground and a run of hurricanes since 2004, is what shapes prices around Orlando.

Permits

The county rules sit in Chapter 15, Article VIII of the Orange County Code, with the exceptions listed in Section 15-279(a). Per the county's permit page, an occupied single-family or duplex lot over 2 acres needs a $121.00 tree removal permit; developed commercial property is $247.98, undeveloped land or lot clearing $230.90 and a timber permit $177.60. A regulated tree is one of the listed species measuring 8 inches or more in diameter at breast height.

Building a house or addition? The county says the building permit itself allows removal of trees for the building pad, driveway, septic system and 15 feet around the pad, so a separate tree permit is not needed for that footprint. Zoning Division arborists review tree permit applications within 14 days.

Trees on a neighbor's side of the line are a civil matter, the county says; it does not referee overhanging limbs. Orlando, Winter Park, Apopka, Ocoee, Winter Garden, Maitland and the other cities run their own tree codes. Statewide, Florida Statutes s. 163.045 bars any permit, fee or replanting requirement for a residential tree that an ISA certified arborist documents as an unacceptable risk.

Burning the brush: the Florida Forest Service allows a yard-waste pile under 8 feet across without authorization only with its setbacks and daytime hours; anything larger, or land clearing, needs an FFS authorization.

Step 1: check whether you live in a city or unincorporated Orange County and how big the lot is. Step 2: if the lot is over 2 acres or vacant, file the county permit before work. Step 3: for a dead, cracked or leaning tree, get an arborist's s. 163.045 risk letter. Step 4: compare bids that list felling, grinding and haul-off separately. Step 5: call 811 before grinding.

Local conditions

Very wet soil: NRCS soil survey data rate 65.5% of mapped acres in Orange County as poorly or very poorly drained and place the water table within 30 cm on 57.3%, from the Econlockhatchee River swamps on the east side to the flatwoods south toward Lake Nona. Saturated summer ground keeps heavy trucks off lawns and lets oaks tip out with their root plates.

Flat, sandy ground elsewhere: per the same NRCS survey only 3.3% of mapped acres are at 8% slope or more and no mapped soil has bedrock within 100 cm, so roots run shallow through sand and stump grinding is easy near the lakes west of Orlando around Windermere and Lake Apopka.

Hurricanes and freezes: FEMA's declarations data list 20 weather- or fire-related major disasters that included Orange County from 1977 through 2024, including 11 hurricanes and five freeze declarations; Charley, Frances and Jeanne in 2004, Irma in 2017, Ian in 2022 and Milton in 2024 all brought down oaks across the county.

Laurel and water oaks are short-lived and decay-prone, and pines on wet lots near the lakes are prone to windthrow, so many calls here are for dead or leaning trees rather than healthy ones.

What drives local prices

  • Species: HomeGuide's national figures run $300-$2,500 for oaks, $250-$1,600 for pines and $200-$1,200 for palms.
  • Height: HomeGuide's bands are $500-$1,500 for a 30-60 ft tree and $850-$2,000 for 60-80 ft, which covers most mature laurel oaks here.
  • Permit: none for an occupied lot of 2 acres or less in unincorporated Orange County; $121.00 above 2 acres and $230.90 to clear a vacant lot.
  • Wet ground: summer saturation can mean mats or smaller machines; we add an est. 10% to 20% for that on soft lots.
  • Disposal: HomeGuide's survey puts chipping at $50-$100 and stump removal at $100-$500+.
  • Method: species, height and disposal ranges are HomeGuide's published national figures (Feb 4, 2026); permit fees are quoted from the Orange County tree permit page; lines marked est. are our estimate, not Orange County bids. Figures checked October 16, 2026.

When something can’t wait

If a storm puts a tree on a line or the house, stay clear and call the utility or 911 first. An arborist's s. 163.045 letter lets a dangerous residential tree come down without a permit; HomeGuide reports emergency removals at 2 to 3 times normal rates, so document the damage before cleanup.

Questions about Orange County

How much does tree removal cost in Orange County, FL?

Most single trees run $400 to $1,200 and oaks $300 to $2,500 on HomeGuide's 2026 national data. Height, wet ground and what the tree overhangs move the price within that range.

Do I need a county permit to remove a tree from my yard?

Not on an occupied single-family or duplex lot of 2 acres or less in unincorporated Orange County. Over 2 acres the county charges $121.00, and vacant land always needs a permit. City residents follow their city's code.

Can I clear trees to build an addition?

Yes, within limits. The county says the building permit covers trees in the pad, driveway and septic area and 15 feet around the pad.

My neighbor's oak hangs over my roof. Will the county help?

No. Orange County treats a neighbor's tree as a civil matter, so it is between you and the owner.

How fast does the county review a tree permit?

The Zoning Division says its arborists review applications within 14 days, so file before you book a crew.

Ask about your clearing project

Tell us the acreage, what is growing on it and what the land is for: pasture, house pad, trails or a view. The form goes to Cornelia Cove LLC, which runs this site, and we reply by email. We use your details only to answer this request, and we pass them to a contractor only if you ask us to.

Bring a range from our estimator to every site visit. A clearing bid should price clearing, stumps, debris disposal and grading separately, and say who handles permits.
