Tree Removal Cost: Davis County, UT

Davis County removals are mostly yard and street trees: aging cottonwoods, Siberian elms, silver maples and box elders in older Bountiful and Layton neighborhoods, plus scrub oak on the foothill benches along the east edge of the county. HomeGuide's February 2026 national survey puts an average removal at $400 to $1,200 and a maple at $600 to $1,200. A short ornamental in a Syracuse yard is cheap; a 70-foot cottonwood over a Farmington roof is not.

There is little true forest here. The Forest Service's FIA sample for Davis County is only a handful of plots, too few for a reliable estimate, so we don't quote one; the county is a narrow strip of suburbs between the Wasatch Front and the Great Salt Lake.

Building keeps going: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey counts 841 single-family buildings authorized in Davis County in 2025 and 920 in 2024.

Permits

We found no county permit for cutting a tree on a private residential lot in Davis County; check your city for street-tree and development rules, and your HOA.

Burning is tightly limited. Utah's air rule R307-202 allows residential cleanup burning only by permit and only when the clearing index is 500 or higher; for counties outside the southern group, that means March 30 to May 30 and September 15 to October 30. North Davis Fire District lists its windows as April 1 to May 31 and September 15 to October 31, with permits issued online through the Utah Division of Air Quality, valid for two weeks, and piles kept 50 feet from structures. The district says no open burning is allowed in Sunset.

Most crews skip burning and haul to a green waste site. Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District's fee schedule, effective September 2, 2026, charges a flat $10 for an in-district load of clean green waste up to 10,000 pounds ($50 out of district), $35 a ton above that, and $10 extra for an uncovered load.

Step 1: check whether the tree overhangs a street or sidewalk your city manages. Step 2: decide on haul-off or chipping rather than a seasonal burn. Step 3: look at the fall zone for the house, fences and Rocky Mountain Power lines. Step 4: get itemized written bids. Step 5: call Utah 811 before grinding.

Local conditions

Wet lakeside soils: the NRCS soil survey for the Davis-Weber Area (UT607) rates 50.6% of mapped acres somewhat poorly to very poorly drained, puts a seasonal water table within about 12 inches (30 cm) on 35.3%, and shows 26.1% subject to flooding, mostly on the low ground toward the lake. Soggy roots let big trees tip in wind.

Canyon winds: FEMA's declarations data list 4 weather-related major disasters for Davis County, the most recent DR-4578 for the straight-line winds that began September 7, 2020 (declared January 2021), along with floods in 1983 and 1984 and a February 2012 severe storm declaration (DR-4053) for the windstorm that began November 30, 2011.

Benches and slopes: NRCS data put only 6.6% of mapped acres at 15% slope or more, but those acres are the foothill neighborhoods where trees sit above houses and access is tight.

Old shade trees: cottonwoods and elms planted generations ago are now huge, brittle and close to homes.

What drives local prices

  • Size: HomeGuide lists $500-$1,500 for 30-60 ft trees, $850-$2,000 for 60-80 ft and $1,200-$2,500+ above 80 ft; old cottonwoods often reach the top bands.
  • Species: maple runs $600-$1,200 and ash $650-$2,000 on HomeGuide's table.
  • Disposal: Wasatch Integrated charges a flat $10 for an in-district green waste load up to 10,000 lb, so haul-off is cheap compared with many places.
  • Access: tight foothill lots and backyard trees behind fences add rigging time, an est. 10% to 25%.
  • Season: HomeGuide says summer and fall bookings can cost 10% to 20% more, and stump removal adds $100-$500+ per stump.
  • Method: size, species and stump figures are HomeGuide national ranges (Feb 4, 2026); burn rules come from Utah DAQ rule R307-202 and North Davis Fire District; disposal fees from Wasatch Integrated; est. marks our own allowance. Checked October 16, 2026.

When something can’t wait

If canyon winds drop a tree on the house or a power line, keep clear and call Rocky Mountain Power or 911 before any cutting. HomeGuide's survey says emergency work often costs 2 to 3 times standard rates; photograph the damage for your insurer.

Ask about your clearing project

Tell us the acreage, what is growing on it and what the land is for: pasture, house pad, trails or a view. The form goes to Cornelia Cove LLC, which runs this site, and we reply by email. We use your details only to answer this request, and we pass them to a contractor only if you ask us to.

Bring a range from our estimator to every site visit. A clearing bid should price clearing, stumps, debris disposal and grading separately, and say who handles permits.
