Tree Removal Cost: Tooele County, UT

In Tooele County the job is usually one of two things: an old cottonwood, elm or ash shading a Tooele City or Grantsville yard, or juniper being cleared off a lot on the benches below the Oquirrh and Stansbury mountains. HomeGuide's February 2026 national survey puts a typical removal at $400 to $1,200 and a cedar or juniper-type tree at $600 to $2,000.

Out of town it's pinyon and juniper country. The Forest Service's 2022 FIA evaluation for Utah counts about 446,500 forested acres in Tooele County, 71.9% of them pinyon/juniper woodland and another 14.2% classed as nonstocked, forest land currently holding too few trees to count as stocked. Those short, dense trees spread onto subdivisions in Erda, Lake Point and Stansbury Park.

Growth swings with the market: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey counts 439 single-family buildings authorized in Tooele County in 2025, down from 677 in 2024.

Permits

We found no county permit for cutting a tree on a private residential lot in Tooele County; check city street-tree rules and your HOA.

Burning depends on where you live. Tooele City Code 3-1-7 (Ord. 2024-31) makes open burning of waste, including tree leaves and yard trimmings, unlawful inside the city; only small recreational fires in a ring are allowed. Elsewhere, Utah's air rule R307-202 and the Tooele County wildfire office allow residential cleanup burning only by permit, only March 30 to May 30 and September 15 to October 30, and only on days with a clearing index of 500 or higher. North Tooele Fire District issues free burn permits, but its page says Stansbury Park allows recreational fires only.

Haul-off is cheap. Tooele County Solid Waste at the Bauer Road landfill lists clean yard waste at $7 per cubic yard, a flat $20 for loads of 4 yards or more, and double charges for untarped loads. Inside Tooele City, monthly bulky waste pickup takes limb bundles under 18 inches across, 5 feet long and 75 pounds; limbs over 4 inches thick can go unbundled.

Step 1: check whether you're inside Tooele City (no burning) or in an unincorporated area. Step 2: pick haul-off, chipping, city bulky pickup or a permitted seasonal burn. Step 3: check the fall zone for the house, fences and Rocky Mountain Power lines. Step 4: compare itemized written bids. Step 5: call Utah 811 before grinding.

Local conditions

Rocky benches: the NRCS soil survey for the Tooele Area (UT611), which covers the county plus parts of Box Elder, Davis and Juab, puts 17.6% of mapped acres at 15% slope or more and finds bedrock within about 39 inches (100 cm) on 16.9%, so juniper stumps on the benches often sit in rock along the foothills.

Salty flats: NRCS data rate 35.0% of the survey area's soils hydric, mostly the low ground toward the Great Salt Lake, where trees are few and roots shallow.

Floods, not storms: FEMA's declarations data list 4 weather-related major disasters for Tooele County, all floods: 1983, 1984, 2005 and 2011. Wind and heavy snow can still break brittle yard trees in winter.

Juniper fuel: dense juniper near homes is a wildfire concern, and clearing it is one of the most common jobs on the benches.

What drives local prices

  • Species: HomeGuide's table lists cedar at $600-$2,000 and ash at $650-$2,000; dense juniper is slow to cut and chip.
  • Size: HomeGuide lists $200-$500 for trees under 30 ft, where most junipers fall, and $500-$1,500 for 30-60 ft yard trees.
  • Volume: clearing many junipers is priced closer to land clearing, which HomeGuide puts at $1,200-$8,000 per acre, and it notes multi-tree discounts of 10% to 25%.
  • Disposal: Tooele County Solid Waste charges $7 per cubic yard for clean yard waste and $20 a load at 4 yards or more; untarped loads pay double.
  • Rock: shallow bench soils can stop a grinder; HomeGuide's survey puts stump removal at $100-$500+.
  • Method: species, size, acreage and stump figures are HomeGuide national ranges (Feb 4, 2026); burn rules come from Tooele City Code, Utah DAQ rule R307-202, Tooele County wildfire and North Tooele Fire District; disposal rules from Tooele County and Tooele City. Checked October 16, 2026.

Ask about your clearing project

Tell us the acreage, what is growing on it and what the land is for: pasture, house pad, trails or a view. The form goes to Cornelia Cove LLC, which runs this site, and we reply by email. We use your details only to answer this request, and we pass them to a contractor only if you ask us to.

Bring a range from our estimator to every site visit. A clearing bid should price clearing, stumps, debris disposal and grading separately, and say who handles permits.
