Land Clearing Crew

Land Clearing Cost Per Acre Calculator

Land clearing cost depends on acreage, how thick the vegetation is, and whether you're mulching brush in place or hauling everything away. HomeGuide puts traditional clearing at $1,200–$8,000 per acre depending on density; forestry mulching runs $400–$2,000 per acre.

How this works

This calculator uses published 2025–2026 cost guides, not quotes we collected. For traditional clearing on parcels of an acre or more, it multiplies your acreage by HomeGuide's per-acre bands for light ($1,200–$2,500), moderate ($2,500–$4,500), and heavy ($4,500–$8,000) vegetation. For 1 to 5 acres, the high end never goes above HomeGuide's published range for a lot that size. For lots under an acre, it shows HomeGuide's published price range for a lot that size, because small jobs carry fixed costs like moving equipment. Forestry mulching uses HomeGuide's $400–$800 per acre (up to $2,000 when dense), plus its published minimum job fee and mobilization charge. For heavy growth we start at $800 per acre: that floor is our estimate, taken from the top of HomeGuide's normal band.

Extras are added at published rates: stump grinding (first stump plus each additional), large-rock removal per acre, and grading for a building site (Angi), and a waste-removal line. We don't apply multipliers for slope, wetness, or tree size, because no source we trust publishes them. Those answers instead show what they usually mean for your quote. Every figure links to its source. Prices vary by region, season, and access, and only a site visit produces a real quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to clear an acre of land?

HomeGuide puts it at $1,200–$8,000 per acre depending on density. Angi's range is $500–$5,600 per acre, with an average of $3,050.

Is forestry mulching cheaper than traditional clearing?

Usually per acre: HomeGuide lists mulching at $400–$800 per acre versus $1,200–$8,000 for clearing. But mulching only grinds stumps near ground level and leaves the roots, so it suits trails, fence lines, pasture, and lots you aren't building on.

Why is my small lot so expensive per acre?

Crews have to move equipment and cover minimum charges. HomeGuide's quarter-acre range is $800–$3,000 per job, far above a quarter of the per-acre rate.

Does the estimate include stump removal?

Only if you add stumps. Grinding runs $120–$400 for the first stump and $30–$60 for each additional one (HomeGuide).

Do I need a permit to clear land?

It depends on acreage and place. NC requires an erosion plan above 1 acre. Texas stormwater rules start at 1 acre. Many Florida counties have tree permits. See our county pages.
