About Land Clearing

Land clearing removes trees, brush, stumps, roots and debris so a parcel can be built on, farmed, fenced or simply used. HomeGuide prices it at $1,200 to $8,000 per acre, depending mostly on how thick the growth is: light $1,200–$2,500, moderate $2,500–$4,500, heavy $4,500–$8,000. Angi reports a national average project of $3,780 across 2,416 verified projects.

The method matters as much as the acreage. Traditional clearing uses dozers and excavators to push over trees and pull stumps — it's what a building site needs. Forestry mulching grinds vegetation in place; it's cheaper, but stumps are only ground near ground level and the roots stay. Selective clearing keeps the trees you want. Our calculator prices your acreage by density and method. Independent local pros can then quote the real site.

Two side-view cross-sections of cleared ground next to standing woods. After forestry mulching, a layer of wood chips covers the ground, stumps are ground near ground level, and the roots stay in the soil. After bulldozing, the trees have been pushed over roots and all into a debris pile for hauling, burning or grinding, leaving bare, disturbed soil with pits where stumps were.
A mulcher grinds trees where they stand and leaves the roots and a protective chip layer. A dozer takes the roots out but leaves bare soil and piles of debris to deal with.

Common Jobs We Route

  • Full clearing for a home site or driveway (stumps and roots out)
  • Pasture or field reclamation from brush and young trees
  • Selective clearing and thinning that keeps specimen trees
  • Fence-line, trail and right-of-way clearing

What Affects the Price

Providers quote their own work — these are the factors that consistently move the number.

  • Vegetation density: light $1,200–$2,500/acre vs heavy $4,500–$8,000
  • Lot size: small lots cost more per acre (¼ acre $800–$3,000 per job; 5 acres $4,500–$35,000)
  • Stumps: $120–$400 for the first, $30–$60 for each additional
  • Debris handling: haul, mulch, or burn where allowed
Three side-view panels of land before clearing. Light: grass with scattered brush and a few saplings. Moderate: thicker brush with a mix of saplings and mid-size trees. Heavy: dense woods of large, closely spaced trees over an understory of brush. An arrow under the panels shows that denser growth means more work per acre.
Density is the biggest driver of clearing cost. Light brush and saplings clear fastest; heavy woods with large trees take the most cutting, grinding and hauling per acre.

Land Clearing FAQs

How much does land clearing cost per acre?

HomeGuide: $1,200–$8,000 per acre by density. Angi: $500–$5,600 per acre, averaging $3,050.

How long does it take to clear an acre?

Angi says a professional team takes 2–12 hours per acre depending on what's being removed. Permits, weather and haul-off can stretch the calendar.

Do I need a permit?

Often, above certain sizes. NC requires an erosion plan above 1 acre. Texas stormwater rules start at 1 acre. Many Florida counties regulate tree removal. See our county pages.
